Preschool Literacy Resources & Reading Benefits

CPP Tuition Assistance participation was a statistically significant predictor of Ohio’s Kindergarten Readiness Assessment-Revised (KRA-R) performance in 2023-24 when controlling for gender, race, and socio-economic status (SES).

Tuition Assistance participation increased the odds of Demonstrating Readiness on the KRA-R by 30.5% and the odds of being On Track for Language and Literacy by 53.8%.

There are numerous benefits of reading to and with preschoolers, including:

  • Language development: Reading to preschoolers helps to expose them to new words and concepts, building vocabulary and comprehension.
  • Cognitive development: Reading supports critical thinking skills through pattern recognition, predictions, and conclusions.
  • Emotional development: Reading helps preschoolers understand and express emotions through character identification and empathy.
  • Social development: Reading with caregivers strengthens bonds and social interaction.
  • Academic success: Preschoolers who read early are more likely to achieve long-term academic success.

Queen City Book Bank & Little Free Library

One of the most successful ways to improve a child’s reading achievement is to increase their access to books, especially at home. This is why we implemented the Little Free Library program in 2018. Since then, we have worked with partners throughout our community to place over 240 Little Free Libraries – and we are still growing! The Queen City Book Bank receives thousands of gently used books each year and Little Free Libraries are the perfect conduit to get books into the hands of children and families who need them most.

Little Free Libraries are part of Queen City Book Bank’s Book Bridge Program, which provides new and gently books to partner organizations serving a range of age groups. Through our Book Bridge Program, we also work with over 150 partners to further enhance book access and elevate literacy as a community priority.

Imagination Library

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Ohio mails kids one free, age-appropriate book each month until their 5th birthday. All kids in Ohio are eligible for this program, which is available at no cost to families. Enroll Now.

Kindergarten Readiness & Academic Progress

Readiness for kindergarten and third grade reading proficiency are viewed as important milestones in a child’s academic success. We are proud of the outcomes demonstrated by our preschoolers but know more than just academic or literacy scores, preparing a child for a lifetime of success means that they are developmentally on track and achieving important milestones.

This requires a focus on physical development, cognitive development, and social-emotional learning. Ensuring our children receive a solid foundation in early education is becoming more challenging. Today’s preschoolers may be entering an early learning environment for the first time, given the constraints of the pandemic limited access when today’s preschoolers were infants and toddlers. Despite these challenges, our Tuition Assistance (TA) recipients enrolled in CPS kindergarten have been Approaching or Demonstrating on the KRA-R at a higher frequency compared to KRA-R district averages from similar Ohio school districts.

CPP TA participants living in high-risk neighborhoods have shown better KRA-R overall and language and literacy performance compared to peers not participating in CPP.  Additionally, CPP Tuition Assistance has been shown to have the greatest impact on kindergarten readiness for Black and Hispanic preschoolers.

High-quality preschool makes a difference!
